On Friday, June 22, 2018, the Columban Mission Center received a letter from an immigrant mother separated from her son at the US/MX border. She is trying to request asylum and is currently in detention in El Paso, TX.
According to the Catholic Church, the right to water, as all human rights, finds its basis in human dignity and not in any kind of merely quantitative assessment that considers water as a merely economic good. Without water, life is threatened. Therefore, the right to safe drinking water is a universal and inalienable right. However, we see how health, nutrition, and sanitation are impacted by inadequate water access and quality, especially on poor communities, women and children.
